If you have never watched a bee colony at its day to day activities, you should. Bees are very interesting and important insects and are fascinating to watch. One of the best ways to observe bees without getting stung is to get an observation bee hive.nnThe types of beehives used in honey production are different than observation beehives. Picture a giant ant farm (but much nicer looking) and you have the idea. Most of these beehives are actually used indoors and have a chute that connects to a window, so that the bees can go outside.nnThese hives typically consist of a stained wood frame that hold two sheets of glass. The honeycomb rests between them. That way you can easily observe the bees at work in their hive without disturbing them. nnPeople tend to use observation hives much in the same way as a fish tank. The only difference really is that bees feed themselves and need to be placed near a window for the chute to be able to go outside. They also make a great point of interest in your home.nnIf you are interested in beekeeping for honey than this type of hive will not be right for you. You will want to get a Langstroth hive instead. Langstroths are placed outdoors and allow the bees to produce plenty of honey for winter before you add the sections you will harvest your honey from.nnIf you decide on an observation hive, you will probably also want to buy bees to stock it with to start out. It is possible to catch bees in the wild, but much easier just to buy them.nnOne of the things that concerns people about bees is getting stung. If you have an observation hive, this is not likely to happen. The bees are never out of the hive in your house and only leave your house through a chute or tube. Now if you are beekeeping for honey production you probably will get stung, although protective clothing does help.nnObserving bees up close and personal is very interesting. If you are looking for a unique accent or just are interested in bees an observation hive may be right for you.
