Tips for Packing Boxes when Moving House

The first vitally important thing is to choose your packing supplies carefully. It is definitely worth the small expense to buy boxes specifically designed for moving – they are stronger and are designed to absorb the impact of the knocks and bumps when moving. Top quality tape is a must – you may save a dollar on cheaper tape but that saving is blown away when the tape breaks and the contents of the box crash to the floor.nnMake sure you have a range of box sizes: small, medium and large. It is better to use the smaller boxes for heavy items like books as they are easier to handle and the size limits the weight. Avoid using newspaper to wrap with as the newsprint ink can rub-off on your finer things and mark your clothes. It is better to use a packing paper, which you can purchase from removal companies. Leave the newspaper as filler/cushioning in your boxes. nnThe next key to successful packing is not to pack what you don’t need. Donate to your favourite charity, or throw away, everything that you don’t need. Old clothes and the bits and pieces that accumulate over the years that you never see or use. If you don’t give them away they will cost you time to pack and unpack and removal time and cost. Why not take the opportunity to clear your home of unwanted clutter.nnWhen you start packing, just pack one room at a time. Label every box and keep a paper list of what is in each box. Another really good idea is to buy a set of cheap colored tapes from your local hardware store. Allocate a different colour of tape to each room in the house and put a ***** of tape across the top of each box. Then when you arrive at your new house, each box is cleverly colour coded to its destination. This little tip will save you time and will also save you money if a removal company is moving the boxes for you.nnWhen packing boxes, place heavy items on the bottom, medium weight items in the middle and light items on the top. Be sure to add cushioning between each layer. Add more cushioning to protect fragile items. And don’t be tempted to put only heavy items in single boxes as these boxes will be too heavy to carry or could result in back injuries.nnAllow yourself lots of time for packing. The more time you have to pack, the more careful and planned your packing will be and the easier the move. The amount of time to pack up a home is often vastly underestimated. If you do not allow enough time to pack, you will create more stress and may find yourself still frantically packing on your move day. Moving in itself is stressful, why add to this stress.
