The Reader is a Must See

Have you seen “The Reader” yet? It’s all right if you haven’t – it had a limited release, and while it was nominated for an Oscar in the best picture race this year, it wasn’t even close to being favored to win, and a lot of people skipped it in favor of that popular Millionaire movie. But that’s the beauty of DVD, isn’t it? If you miss a gem of a movie like “The Reader” during its theatrical release, you can still enjoy a moving, intense experience in the privacy of your own home. nnIn “The Reader,” Kate Winslet plays Hanna Schmitz, a woman who has an affair with Michael, an underage boy (the less appreciated David Kross, who holds much of film’s heart in his talented hands), and is a **** guard during the holocaust, but regrets neither. It is almost entirely in the hands of Kate Winslet that we do not hate Hanna, and she is largely successful. nnRegret is a main theme for this film which is surprising to many. But each shot is loving and there is a portrayal of beauty and tragedy throughout the entire film. Winslet wins her first Oscar in for this film and it is brilliant. nnThis particular movie is not like other holocaust films. It is very original and turns the situation into something unexpected. nnIf ever a movie was made to be enjoyed on DVD, this is it: you’ll want to enjoy it with a glass of wine, or a pint of chocolate chip ice cream. You’ll experience almost voyeuristic embarrassment as you witness the quiet moments between Michael and Hanna. You’ll cry in the privacy of your own home and make a place for “The Reader” on that special shelf you reserve for the best movies you’ve ever seen.
