The Boston-New York Rivalry is Alive

08.13.2009 · Posted in Recreation Articles

After a few years of rubbing it in the faces of Yankees fans (and most of 2009), fans of the Red Sox were dealt a sharp blow last week when the team was swept in a four game showdown at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees built their lead from 2.5 games to 6.5, and the Red Sox scored very few runs in the process. In fact, they went over two games without a run before Victor Martinez hit a two-run blast.nnThis run had little impact on the outcome of the game. The Yankees countered with back to back HRs, and won the final game in the series by three runs.nnThe Sox have now lost 6 games in a row, and are limping back into Fenway to face the Tigers. Let’s pray for some good ole home cooking!nnBoston typically goes through lulls like this each season, but it usually relates to an overall team slump. This year, fans can point their fingers at injury issues to the team’s starting pitching staff.nnThe team has enough tools in place to turn things around, but a six-game losing streak really has an impact this late in the season.nnRegardless of the outcome, one thing that’s certain at this point is the strength of the rivalry between the two teams. It seems that every year, Boston and New York are neck and neck and this year is no exception.nnBoston will need its bats to rescue the team. The pitching situation is questionable at best, but Ortiz, Youkilis, Pedroia and crew are the heart of the team right now and must make an impact.nnWhen all is said and done, I still believe in the Sox. New York seems to slip a little more with each year, and there’s still plenty of baseball left.
