The Olympics for Microsoft nerds has deeply wholesome energy

Oh, you think you're "proficient" in Microsoft Office? Put down your résumé and think again. Each year, students between the ages of 13 and 22 gather for the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship, a competition for the title of World Champion in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. And the competition is fierce. Over the past few days, 155 contestants from 53 countries gathered at the Marriott Marquis, across the street from Times Square, to flaunt their Microsoft skills. Contestants in each category must recreate a finished product — a Word document, an Excel workbook, or a PowerPoint presentation — as well as a set of loose guidelines. The test lasts 50 minutes, and whoever completes the task most faithfully to the original (thus accruing the most points) is the winner. Students don't have any idea which components of their program will be on the test ahead of time, so they have to get acquainted with as much of their program as possible in practice. Read more...
