Temper Tantrums Are Making Me Crazy! Learn Strategies For Success

Frustrated with the amount or extreme level of temper tantrums your child is having? Maybe they happen at the grocery store or at the restaurant. Maybe they hit worst at bedtime. Whenever it happens it can be daunting. I will provide a couple of tactics that can divert the energy and reclaim a more gentle child that you know is inside there somewhere.nnFirst and foremost, you need to remember that talking your child through the process is not likely going to work. Very few people, in a full rage (adults and children both) can think straight or use the logical part of their brain to calm down. If adults can’t do it, it is even less likely to happen with children. Their emotions are on fire here. You need to quench that fire if you want the tantrum to stop.nnTo truly tame that tantrum quickly you need to change their physical expression of emotions. This works great on adults as well as children. Actually, if you do this first it will make it easier to deal with your screaming child with poise. Take a deep breathe and think about a recent happy event. Your body language will begin to model the emotional state of the memory.nnFor the child, give them a reason to do something different with their body. Ask them to look up at the ceiling. Have them look at the clouds. Ask them a silly and completely unrelated question. Involve them in a really strange game of imagination – maybe it is aliens invading or a pretend tea party with the items you have on hand. Just something out of the norm.nnWell, interruption is the start. Now just keep them distracted with other things – stories, responsibilities, whatever. Just keep the topic away from what set the whole thing off in the first place. They need some time to move on.
