Iconic American fashion designer Ralph Lauren was born in the Bronx in 1939 to parents who emigrated from Belarus. As his parents were of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, he attended private Jewish schools before graduating in 1957 from DeWitt Clinton High School. While still in middle school, Ralph became well-known for selling ties to his fellow classmates.rnrnBorn Ralph Lifshitz, he and his brother changed their names while still in high school to avoid teasing. He was quite vocal about his choice, emphasizing that the name was not changed to deny his Jewish heritage in anyway. Lauren studied business in college for two years before dropping out and serving a two-year stint in the army. He later worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesman before opening a store of his own where he sold ties under the label Polo.rnrnBy 1970, Ralph Lauren’s Polo line was a well-established label of high quality men’s sportswear and he received the COTY award, a prestigious recognition given by American fashion critics. He also began releasing a line of menswear-inspired women’s suits. These were the first to display the now-famous Polo logo. Soon afterward, the casual Polo shirt was introduced. Ralph Lauren also gained fame for his assistance clothing the cast for the 1974 film “The Great Gatsby.”rnrnToday, Ralph Lauren boutiques are available across the county and the company is worth billions of dollars. In 2010, Ralph Lauren received the Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur from French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
