What are the Uses of Probiotic Bacillus Subtilis?

Probiotic Bacillus subtilis is a spore-creating Gram-positive bacterium found in soil and the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants like cattle, goats, and sheep. It can also be found in the GI tract of Humans.

However, it can survive in harsh environmental conditions, as the spores can survive up to six years in space if they are coated with dust particles that protect it from solar rays.

This bacteria is also used on an industrial scale by biotechnology companies to produce enzymes, pharmaceutical components, and GMOs. For humans, Bacillus subtilis can be neglected.

The cultures of Bacillus subtilis were quite popular all over the world before the introduction of antibiotics. It was also used as an immunostimulatory agent which can treat gastrointestinal and urinary tract diseases. After the introduction of antibiotics in the 1950s, probiotic declined in their popularity.

However, Bacillus subtilis has been use in the livestock and poultry industries as an alternative to antibiotics.

B. subtilis is mostly use in Japanese food natto’s commercial production, which is similar to Korean food cheonggukjang. Its formulation consists of Enterococcus faecium and Bacillus subtilis which is used widely in Asia since 1994.

FDA has not approved the Bacillus subtilis supplements for medical use. The supplements can also lack solid clinical research.

a. Gut Health

  • Gut Microbiota – Consuming significant quantities of B. subtilis can help to restore the normal gut microbiota among humans following an antibiotic usage or illness. It can increase Bifidobacterium which decreases the Clostridium groups, and enhances the growth of L. reuteri and L. acidophilus.

  • Diarrhea – B. subtilis can reduce antibiotic incidence associated with patients who have diarrhea and prevent nausea, bloating, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In some Asian clinical trials, the mixture of E. faecium and B. subtilis can improve abdominal pain, distention, and fever among patients who suffer diarrhea. Most of the trials did not find any significant difference with these probiotics with acute diarrhea.

  • IBS – B. subtilis when mixed with E. faecium that can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of abdominal pain among patients who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
  • H. pylori – In a study, B. subtilis contains probiotics that can improve H. pylori eradication and decrease diarrhea & side effects when used in conjunction with triple therapy.

Bacteriocin in B. subtilis can inhibit the growth of various pathogenic bacteria, decreasing the frequency of respiratory infections among older people.

A probiotic contains both B. faecium and B. subtilis which shifted the intestinal microbiota among patients who suffer liver cirrhosis back towards levels in healthy subjects. These probiotics can reduce circulating endotoxin levels in cirrhotic patients with endotoxemia.
