Mothers jewelry usually consists of the birthstones relating to the mother’s children. It can also contain stones that represent the mother and father as well. Birthstones signify the month in which the family member was born.nnJewelry that is linked to twelve months or signs of the zodiac goes all the way back to the Bible. The High Priest in the temple often wore a garment adorned with the twelve stones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel. nnThe first type of mothers jewelry featuring the birthstones of children was a piece made with two wedding bands joined by birthstones. These rings were a big seller during the 60’s and it was traditional that the stones be set from oldest child to the youngest. nnBirthstones are given certain attributes or powers that have come down from age to age. The person wearing the stone is supposed to get power from it. A mother wearing a child’s birthstone is said to receive those attributes. A mother with a child born in March would wear an Aquamarine. Aquamarine is supposed to bring love and affection to the wearer who is supposed to be able to make friends easily. The mother would be well respected and liked in the community and should have many friends. Folklore also states that the child will be protected from all ill as long as the mother wears that birthstone. nnToday mother’s jewelry comes in many forms. It can be found in necklaces, bracelets, and broaches. Rings continue to be popular with the legend that they are a never ending circle symbolic of a mother’s love. In ancient times it was thought that the third finger of the left hand was attached to the heart, the reason a wedding band was worn on that finger. Mother’s rings are also worn on that finger symbolizing motherly love. nnSome mother’s rings come in straight lines of stones around the ring while others can have one central prominent stone with several smaller ones positioned around it. Sometimes the largest stone will represent the mother with other stones representing the children the larger the oldest child and then graduating down from there. Mother’s jewelry, be it a ring or necklace is a wonderful representation of family.
