Mild Cerebral Palsy

Mild cerebral palsy is an indication of the degree of severity of the brain damage in a patient. The symptoms in mild cerebral palsy are mild and almost not recognizable. The patient has to undergo a series of medical tests before doctor can make a diagnosis of mild cerebral palsy.nnMild cerebral palsy is sometimes difficult to diagnose since the symptoms tend to be subtle. In fact, many children with mild cerebral palsy may only experience an awkward gait (as a result of walking on tiptoes, for instance) or slight limb impairment. Oftentimes, mild cerebral palsy requires little or no treatment and children are able to live relatively normal lives. nnBecause children with mild cerebral palsy have only physical limitations but with intellectual abilities still intact, most of them do not qualify for any type of therapy or treatment to help alleviate the problems.nnThe primary cause of the cerebral palsy is injury sustained by the brain during prenatal, or early development, and even during childbirth. Children diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy have brain damage that is not extensive and has less severe symptoms. However, the brain injury is not reversible.nnThere are many ways brain injury can be sustained, including as a result of:nn*asphyxia or lack of oxygen during or after delivery;nn*severe jaundicenn*fetal infections or severe infections in the first year or so after birthnn*trauma during delivery.nnChildren with mild cerebral palsy may be recognized with the following:nn*walking on their toesnn*difficulty with coordination nn*difficulty with balancenn*physical difficulties involving the use of one or more limbs and developmental delays
