Unity Technologies has a track record of providing updates to developers after the release of major versions, including Unity 5.x. For example, Unity 5.8 was released in December 2016, 2 months after the release of Unity 5.7, a major version which was released in August 2016. The Unity 5.8 release shipped improvements based on feedback from developers who were using Unity 5.x.

Unity uses an automatic backup feature for each project. Backing up a project means copying all of the project files along with the project files into a backup folder. Using Unity makes it easy to perform backups, repair project files, or restore backups. It also allows creating and modifying project files for a project without compromising any of the project files already present in the project folder. The backup feature is configured under the File menu in the Unity editor. Any and all projects that are opened can be backed up, since the same project files are used by all projects. In addition, each project includes a script file that specifies the type of archive being produced by the project. The archive is also accessible from the Script Editor.

Unity 5.4 introduced a feature called ‘Lock Project To Version’. This mechanism occurred when a developer modifies one of their projects in the Unity software or when a bug fix or improvement (called ‘pull request’) is submitted for inclusion.
