Four Ways For New Moms To Ease The Stress Of That First Day Of Day Care

10.09.2011 · Posted in Family Articles

That first anxious day will come for every parent when they must drop off their little darling at a day care center. Your cute, cuddly infant is a grown up toddler now with many definite ideas of his own. One of those ideas is that there is no way he is going to leave you and walk through that door that leads to his day care center – absolutely no way.rnrnYour brain tells you that all will be well once he settles in. In a few weeks, the routine will be set and he will look forward to seeing his new friends. Until that day comes, here are four tips to ease your pain a little on that dreaded first day.rnrnTip 1: Pack the diaper bag the night before.rnrnYou are for sure going to spend that first day away from your child pondering whether you remembered their blue bankie, their purple teddy bear or their favorite teething ring. To relieve your stress, pack all the must haves in the bag for your toddler the night before so you don’t have to rush out the door in the morning with that on your mind.rnrnTip 2: Interview your child’s teacher and the daycare administration before enrolling.rnrnWhen my oldest son started preschool we only had one option within reasonable driving distance of our house (and I was WAY too pregnant with my third child to consider anything that didn’t qualify as reasonable!). Because it was the only option, and because it had come highly recommended by friends, I didn’t interview the staff as well as I should have.rnrnBig mistake. Take the time to get to know your child’s teachers before they walk through those doors. Just because someone else recommends them highly, does not mean that they have the same standards as you do.rnrnTip 3: Enroll your child in an institution that has a consistent reputation for outstanding success with children.rnrnYou may be new in town and find that there is a wide selection of day care enters to choose from. Under closer inspection, however, you find that just a couple of them have a reputation of being consistently outstanding. Most of them will be iffy.rnrnTip 4: Take the night off the night before and the night after your child’s first day to just spend a little time.rnrnIt is quite probable that your toddler’s first day of daycare coincides with your first day back to work. Both of you will be wiped out at the end of the day. Both of you will have undergone some stressful situations. Recognize this and devote some real quality time to each other. You don’t need to wash a load of clothes or clean the refrigerator. You do need to order a pizza and enjoy each other. The two of you have earned it.
