Before you even consider taking your brand new vessel out for a trip on the ocean it is in your own best interest to take a boat safety course and have a boat safety inspection to check for the mandatory safety tools. The US Coast Guard can give you with a list of compulsory as well as proposed boat safety equipment.nnLife jackets, or personal floating tools as they are formally called, should be promptly available for every occupant of the boat. They should also be conformed to the size of the person who is meant to wear them in case of an emergency. They must be in good working condition with all the straps and clips situated properly and usable. It is a good suggestion to have them fitted to the passengers so that if needed they can be put on without much further adjusting. In some states there is a minimum age for which the putting on of a life vest is obligated every time.nnAs a huge part of boating safety there should also be present on board a recently checked fire extinguisher. It should be clearly labelled so that anybody can locate it if needed and reach for it in time. There are different kinds of fire extinguishers, designed to extinguish different kinds of fires. For boating safety it is advisable to get a Type B or C fire extinguisher, these are designed for tackling fires started or fuelled by oil, grease and gas, or electrical fires.nnAs a last part of boating safety, particularly for boats with gasoline engines and specifically if the engine is mounted in the boat, great ventilation is important.nnNot only to avoid any build up of carbon monoxide, endangering the crew with poisoning, but also to limit gasoline fumes from building up and becoming a dangerous fire hazard.
