Will the paperless office save the world?

By: adamwalker

These days many companies tend to look for a more ecological solutions for the work done in offices and some companies even apply for all kinds of eco certificates to have a small green wash and look this way better in the eyes of their customers. For example paperless office was kind of a movement or a trend, according to which the world was saved through recycled paper and migrating the work more and more into the memory cards of the computers.

It is true, that the paper and it´s production and consuming are playing a part in deforestation and polluting the nature. However, paper production is only a small part in deforestation of for example rainforests of Amazon. If the office worker of the western world would want to make an effect on deforestation she should rather look into her eating choices on a lunch break, since most of the deforestation is due to demands of agriculture and these days also of the ever growing need for alternative energy solutions and vegetable based biodiesel. Actually the use of the raw wood of a paper mills have been decreasing since most of the paper is nowadays produced from recycled material.

The other side of the moving into paperless world is the increasing use of the electronic devices in the office work, which has meant increasing use of energy as well. These days almost all administrative work, like electronic accounting (in Finnish=sähköinen kirjanpito) and the electronic salary payments, scheduling and the electronic communications run all through the computers and the internet connections. Energy production is a big player for example in the greenhouse effect and the climate change. The paperless office uses as well raw materials harmful for nature, such as lead and quicksilver, in their computers, which are many times produced in countries with loose environmental regulations.
