Understanding foreign currency exchange

By: Larry Reid

The foreign exchange, usually shortened to Forex, is often a closed book to those who donít have direct dealings with it. However, foreign currency exchange affects every area of business and commerce, so itís important to be familiar with at least the basics.

Foreign currency exchange is the trading of one currency for another Ė for example, the trading of the US dollar for the UK pound. Instead of cash being exchanged for goods or services, cash is exchanged for cash of a different denomination i.e. from a different country. This allows international trading to take place.

The value of the transfer is expressed as the foreign currency exchange rate, or Forex rate. This tells us how much a foreign currency is worth, when compared to a single unit of British currency. The unit of British currency is the GB Pound, and all other currencies are compared to this. So the American exchange rate, for example, may be 0.63 US dollars per 1 GB pound.

When trading goods, or buying property abroad, itís important to get the best exchange rate possible. However, this fluctuates on a day-to-day or even hour-to-hour basis. This is why there are foreign exchange brokers who do nothing but trade large sums of money on the foreign exchange. Like speculators, they track all the nuances of the foreign exchange rate, buying and selling different currencies to get the best rates for their clients.

Dealing in foreign currency exchange is a complex skill. We at Pure FX are online brokers, specialising in getting the best foreign currency exchange rates for both private and corporate clients.
