Trend of Abortion: A Growing Problem

By: James Pen

There are too many causes against the practice of abortion. Be it physical, sociological, emotional, legal or ethical, all factors combine together to make abortion the controversial hoopla it is. The rate of abortion is increasing daily, with the teen pregnancy cases and unwanted pregnancy by the working couples. Sometimes, contraceptives might not work. Or sometimes, the couple backtracks from their decision. When the actual reality of having a kid dawns on them, they get scared and the first option in their mind is that of abortion.
Where does the controversy lie?
The controversy is over the freedom of choice and freedom of life. Those in favour of choice believe that it is the right of the woman to treat her body the way she wants. Those in favour of life, believe that no one has the right to snatch the freedom to live from the innocent child who hasn't even opened his eyes to the world.
It's a freer world but we are not free from responsibilities, right?
Due to more and more young adults and teenagers getting into sexual relations much before they should, the cases of abortion are on an ever increasing rate. The sexual education isn't explicit enough to warn about the aftermaths or precautions to be taken before the intercourse. Then there is sex-selective abortion. Even literates are still stuck on the idea of 'boys are better'. An additional factor is risk to maternal or fetal health, which was cited as the primary reason for abortion in over a third of cases in some countries
Take into account the long term effects of abortion
The long term effects of abortion are too harmful for the woman who undergoes it. Often, one abortion causes future sterility. Emotional scars left behind don't go away easily. Unsafe abortions are a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide. Approximately 20 million unsafe abortions are performed annually, with 97% taking place in developing countries. Deaths from unsafe abortion account for around 13% of all maternal deaths. The worldwide statistics sure are frightening.
Internationally, women are equally likely to seek abortions whether they live in developed or undeveloped countries. Those in undeveloped countries are equally likely to seek abortions whether they are legal or illegal. It seems clear that abortions will always be in demand by a diverse group of women, regardless of the legal status of abortion. We need to make sure that abortion is only performed only when it is a necessity for the safety of the pregnant woman and not otherwise.
