Dust collectors are the difference between a hazardous/health problem and a safer/clean environment that should be provided for those who are employed in industries that require them. With the many concerns of air quality in industries, the absences of dust collectors present a variety of safety and health risks.

What are dust collectors?

Dust collectors are air pollution control devices used in any manufacture setting to maintain or improve the quality of air by separating particle matters from process air in the workplace environment. There is an array of dust collectors used to treat unalike air pollutions. The most universally used dust collectors are the cartridge dust, inertial, fabric dust, scrubbers/air washers, and electrostatic precipitators. In the next topic, explanations are given of each of these dust collectors and how they are used in the workplace to make certain that the area is environmentally and atmospherically safe.

Dust Collectors Usages

In general dust collectors are used to ventilate operations such as crushing, grinding, conveying, screening, drying, packaging and loading. Listed below are dust collectors usages:

Inertial separators. These types of dust collectors incorporate inertia and gravity to break up any dust particles from the air stream by decreasing the flow. In the slowing down process, the heavier dust particles are forced to settle by gravity and falls into a hopper unit.

- Baghouse collectors. Another name used for baghouse is fabric dust collectors. With these types of collectors, the air is filtered as the dust particles from the filled air stream passes through the fabric bags.

- Air washers and scrubbers. In this process dust collectors remove dust particles from the air by collecting airborne dirty particles, forming them into water droplets, and then removing them with mist eliminators.

- Electrostatic precipitators. This process of atmospheric dust elimination is carried out by the use of electrostatic charges. The cleaning process takes place as dust particles are passed through electrodes, charged, collected, and then dispersed.

- Cartridge dust collectors. With the cartridge dust collectors, the cleaning process uses a compressed air jet. Dust removal is obtained using a clean air ejection procedure, where dust is accumulated on the outer surface of the filter then swept out by a positive pressure.

Industries that Employ Dust Collectors

Dust collectors are essential in many types of manufacturing or agricultural settings and are usually required by law. Industries that employ dust collectors are:

- Manufacturing. Virtually every form of manufacturing uses some form of dust collector, or dust, fume, particle, or smoke collection system, combined with the duct system of their facility.

- Welding. Worker safety is important and clean air is priority when welding, especially since a variety of illnesses have been tied to welding smoke. Fume collectors are used to eliminate welding smoke and fumes at the point it is generated to keep it from entering the workers breathing zone.

- Fiber glass and plastic. Fiberglass and plastic dust tends to cause bridging between filters in horizontal cartridge collectors. Dust collectors work well in these situations to discharge fiberglass strands and dust from the cartridges.

- Mining. Dust control systems in these areas look to reduce the amount of dust that escapes into the workplace, separate fines from the product, recover product, and meet emission regulations.

- Agriculture. Dust collectors can be used in high volume dust extractions from multiple seed processing applications such as corn shellers, seed cleaning, preparation, coating, and general facility ventilation. Also appropriate for high volume wood waste and agricultural dust applications.

- Food Manufacturing. Every food manufacturer must have a clean processing facility. This is important and is required according to health and safety standards, especially since some food dusts are allergens. Collectors provide high efficiency filtration of dust from substances such as flour, starch, and sugar.

Without effective in-plant dust collectors and air filtration systems the heavy levels of dust and smoke can present risks. These risks can include over exposure to dust from different materials resulting in health issues such as bronchitis, emphysema and sometimes even cancer. The extremely high levels of smoke and fumes throughout a facility can also present dangers as well as a skyrocketing price tag. It is better to be safe by investing in dust collectors that will fit your company’s workplace need, than to later regret that you did not.
