Tooth Extraction

By: bookmydoctor

The dental treatment dealing with the elimination of decayed tooth or the wisdom tooth is most commonly referred to as tooth extraction. It is used as a cure of variety of illness and as a method of torture for forced confession. The variety of additional reasons that calls for extraction of tooth includes:

• Extra teeth blocking the path of other teeth coming from inside.
• Brutal gum diseases affecting the supporting tissue.
• To prepare for certain orthodontic treatment.
• Fractured teeth.
• Infection or tooth decay.
• Teeth in the fracture line.
• Insufficient space for wisdom tooth.
• For receiving radiation from head to neck.
• Cost-effective method of treatment.

The extraction is done through two methods, i.e., surgical extraction and simple extraction. Surgical methods involve removal of teeth that cannot be easily accessed as they are broken under gum line or have not erupted fully. The simple extractions are executed on visible teeth’s under local anesthetic. It can also be done by using just an injection. In case of conscious sedations, steroids may be recommended.

Extraction of wisdom tooth
The third molar, often known as wisdom teeth are as important as the other teeth, but are prone to more problems than any other tooth. Wisdom tooth erupts between the ages of 12 years to 21 years, when there is a very little room left in the mouth. In result the teeth erupts sideways, partially or remain impacted. This leads to pain infection, gum line and facial swelling, determining the symptoms for wisdom tooth extraction. The time taken is as less as a single visit.

Preparation for the Extraction of Tooth
First, the X-ray of the infected tooth is taken by the oral surgeon, followed by the surgery. Antibiotics are prescribed in case of infection at the time of surgery, weak immune system, long surgery and some specific medical conditions. The anesthesia is avoided in case of cold, stuffy nose or cough, nausea and vomiting.

After care
After the tooth extraction the patient is recommended to put the ice packs on face to reduce swelling and have soft or cool food stuff for few days. Most swelling and bleeding ends within a day, while the initial healing take approximately two weeks. After the surgery, smoking, spitting and use of straw is entirely prohibited.

Tooth extraction requires a thorough care as the break down of blood clot too early might develop dry socket. Here, the underlying bone is exposed to air and food causing pain, bad odor and taste. The dry socket generally causes pain on the third day after the extraction. It needs instant medication or else may lead to infection. People usually suffer from sinus while extracting the upper molars. Sinus is the bone dividing the tooth socket from bone itself. This bone if extracted with the teeth, leads to unbearable pain. Similarly, the patient may also suffer from the nerve injuries, trismus, bruising, and swelling and prolonged bleeding.
Therefore, go for a doctor after a thorough research.
