The Failings Of Netflix Mexico And Netflix Brasil

By: Vikram Kuamr

Online streaming is extremely popular outside of the United States and it is only growing more so, thanks to the internet and an internet-savvy generation who want access to the same things that people in the United States get access to, including movies and television shows. Unfortunately, even some blockbuster movies never make it to Latin America, so the demand for online services with access to such movies is great. This is where Netflix Mexico and Netflix Brasil were supposed to come in. With the popularity and success of Netflix in the United States sky-high and growing, it was not unreasonable that the people in Latin America expected that their versions would be identical to the North American one other than the available languages.

Unfortunately, Netflix in Latin America has proven to be very different from Netflix in the United States. There are a great many essential differences that have left people who waited expectantly for Netflix in Latin America disappointed and disillusioned.

Probably the most lamented shortcoming of Netflix in Latin America is the extremely limited range of movies and shows that are available as compared to the US version. This is due to a variety of reasons, such as the need to dub shows or provide subtitles in Spanish and other languages. Another is the unwillingness of Netflix’s partners for their content to be released outside of the United States, where piracy rampant and movie developers are losing millions of dollars every year to such illegal activities.

Besides the lack of availability of movies, television serials are also affected in that, often, some seasons of a television serial will not be available outside the United States. Perhaps only the first few seasons will be available, while the rest can only be accessed by people living in the US.

Another problem that some people have is the way in which some movies and shows have been translated into Spanish and other Latin American languages. Most of the time, one would expect for a DVD being sold in Brazil, for example, to have both the English soundtrack and one dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese. However, there are some shows that only have a dubbed soundtrack, and there is simply no option to listen to it in its original English form. This is particularly distressing for those who either only understand English or who want to view the movie as it was originally meant to be seen and heard. In addition, translations may not always be accurate, such that they often detract from the movie or show in some way, thus reducing the enjoyment that a viewer might get from it.

At the end of the day, even those people who have access to Netflix Mexico or Netflix Brasil would prefer having access to Netflix US, and the only way to gain access to that version of Netflix is either to be in the United States itself, or to disguise your online location such that the Netflix servers think that you are in the United States. This solution is one that many people in Latin America have turned to, even in those places that now have their own version of Netflix.
