The Aluminum Coating Process Made Easy

In the galvanic series aluminum metal is on the anodic side. It is readily oxidized like zinc and magnesium. The aluminum oxide is very hard, corrosion resistant, insulator, abrasion resistant and very tenacious. In most natural form, the oxide of aluminum is less than 0.5 microns in thickness. Though this naturally occurring thin film, being attached to a soft ductile metal can be easily damaged. Thus the aluminum coating process also known as anodizing should be carried out carefully. Weak alkali solutions should be used to remove oils and greases and to remove heavy oxides, surface should be properly etched. The insoluble components which remain on the etched surface is removed by dipping it in desmut solution.
There are three basic methods by which aluminum coating manufacturers introduce color into the anodized films: 1st) surface pigments /dyes : here a bath consisting of organic dyes or inorganic pigments is prepared in which the anodized aluminum is immersed. Mostly all the organic colors get affected by environmental causes like UV rays etc. 2nd) integral colors: these colors are prepared by electrochemical means. A special electrolyte is prepared and aluminum is immersed with required electrical conditions and temperature.3rd) electrolytic deposition: here the base of the anodic film is deposited with naturally stable metals and metal oxides.
