Strategies Followed by Tollywood Producers

By: Nandha

In the early days of Telugu film industry (popularly known as Tollywood), the film production was quiet easy. Several factors such as paying remuneration for the cast and crew, the cost of sets, cost of location and several other factors were manageable with affordable expenses. When the film has finally released the producers are in profit zone just in few days, as the investments made on film in these days are very low.
As these days passed, rapid changes have taken place in the film production. Producing a Tollywood film has been a challenge for the film makers during the middle days of the Telugu film industry. The middle days of Telugu film industry contains top heros named as Chiranjeevi, Bala Krishna, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh (1990 to early years of 2000). During these days the cost of producing a film has enormously increased due to some factors such as increase in the cost of sets, actors used to demand huge remuneration (in crores of rupees), the wages paid to daily labor has increased and all the departments which belong to producing a film have increased.
In the parallel way, the success rate of the films released in entire year has dropped extremely low. As a result, huge losses were incurred by producers. The increase in the flop rate is mainly due to poor content in the film, nothing refreshing in the story and so on.
So the producers of Telugu Film industry are finding new ways to overcome these issues. The new ways include selling audio rights, satellite rights, overseas rights and all the possible ways to get returns on investments they made. By following these techniques the producers are in the safe zone before the release of the film and making profits when the film is released based on the stardom and fan following of that particular actor.
One more strategy that makers of Tollywood are implementing these days to earn profits even though there is a chance that the film will be a major dud at the Box Office is by releasing the film in maximum number theatres. By screening the film in maximum number of theatres more number of audience will watch movie as they dont know that film will succeed or not.
If the film gets a positive talk then producers are going to make huge profits and if film gets negative response the producers are in the safe zone by implementing all these strategies.
However the producers who are making small films are facing problems of not getting theaters to screen their film.
