Start Cupping

Cupping is a form of alternative therapy in which a local suction is created on the skin. It is the inverse procedure of a massage – rather than applying pressure down towards an area, it uses gentle pressure pulling upwardly. Cupping has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and many other cultures for centuries as a therapeutic practice.
According to Chinese medicine, pain results from the stagnation and blockage of Qi, or vital energy, vital fluids, lymph, phlegm, and blood. “Where there’s stagnation, there will be pain. Remove the stagnation, and you remove the pain.” Cupping aims to break up stagnation and congestion by drawing congested blood or energy to the surface allowing it to be dispersed in order to restore the body’s natural flow of energy.
Cupping uses small glasses, silicon cups, or bamboo jars as suction devices to be placed on the skin. Through suction, the skin and superficial muscle layers are drawn into the cup by creating a vacuum as the cup is placed on the skin over a targeted area. Generally, cups are left in place between five and fifteen minutes.
There are different kinds of cupping. In dry cupping, suction cups are simply left in place over the skin. In wet cupping, the practitioner will make a small incision on the skin and then apply the suction cup to draw out small amounts of blood. In gliding cupping, the cups are gently moved across the skin once the suction has occurred. Therapeutic grade essential oils or fractionated coconut oil can be applied to improve movement of the cups along the skin.
