Protecting Yourself on the Web

By: UmerSheikh

Since its inception in 1990 the World Wide Web has revolutionized how the world shares information. Unfortunately, it has also opened up a whole new world of bad people doing bad things. Illegal material has never been so readily available to tempt the most innocent of people into breaking the law, not to mention those who like to cause misery by creating viruses and malicious programs. What is the answer? Go back to pen & paper I hear people cry! Nice idea but the reality is: the world of computing and the internet is firmly here to stay.
So let's see if we can help you keep safe whilst you enjoy all that the web has to offer. The first thing to remember is if you are connected to the internet you need to have at the very least Anti-Virus software installed but better yet decent Internet Security. There are a number of packages available, all at varying costs, and all offer different levels of protection. One thing to avoid is the big named brands that are sold in the major high street retailers as they don't tend to offer as good protection, and they can also dramatically affect the overall performance of the computer.
Secondly, and the most obvious thing to beware of is websites containing illegal content i.e. pornographic video's/images and file sharing. There is always a good chance that when downloading any of these types of files you will be downloading a virus or malicious program. If you have teenage children this can be of particular worry on how to prevent access to these types of site. Again, there are a number of options to monitor and prohibit viewing certain sites. Windows Vista and Windows 7 now have a surf control feature as well as there being software available to download free which will enable you to password protect access to different categories of websites.
Even with this protection, there can be the odd occasion where you will inadvertently end up with a virus or malicious program and most of the time they can be removed using specialist software tools. However there are still the odd times when the only option is to completely clean the computer and re-install back to the factory settings. If this is the case then you will need to make sure you have a decent backup of your data.
Hopefully this advice will set you on the right track, increasing your awareness of internet security and reducing your chances of downloading viruses and mallard.
