Medical Staff Credentialing: How it Can Reduce Healthcare Costs

By: Jeremy Davis

Each and every year the cost of healthcare goes up. One of the big reasons for this is the cost associated with medical malpractice. Every time a doctor makes a mistake there are a lot of costs that come up to take care of it. The good news is that a lot of hospitals are taking steps in the right direction to reduce these costs.
One thing that a lot of hospitals have started doing is medical staff credentialing. Credentialing is a process that hospitals use to make sure that a doctor is actually qualified to do any given procedure. If the doctor doesn't have the credentials he cannot do the procedure in that hospital. This helps to keep unskilled doctors from messing up on procedures they aren't qualified to do and keeps skilled doctors from overstepping their own knowledge.
So how does this help the healthcare system? Well, there are a couple of ways this helps:
First, it cuts down on patient injury by real malpractice. Credentialing keeps unqualified doctors from doing a procedure they shouldn't be doing. If you don't have the credentials, you don't do the procedure.
Secondly, it saves on time and expense of investigations. There is a lot of money lost by taking the time of healthcare professionals to track down what happened and why. If there are less incidents, there is less cost.
There are other reasons as well, but these are some of the main reasons why credentialing is a good idea. If any hospitals are not currently using this type of system, they really should.
It is relatively easy for hospitals to start a medical staff credentialing program if they don't have one already. There are several companies out there that specialize in developing software just for this purpose. By using software to handle the credentialing process a hospital can be very efficient in maintaining an effective program.
Credentialing may not be the ultimate fix to some of the problems in the healthcare industry, but it is a step in the right direction. As costs continue to rise, it's good to see that hospitals are taking steps in the right direction to help those costs go down.
