By: Todd Daon

All these characteristics are found in skiing. And all these characteristics are displayed in the beautiful new ski resort of Mariborsko Pohorje.

But how did skiing become popular in the first place? Why does it have millions of fans? By visiting the new ski resort of Mariborsko Pohorje, a plausible answer may be found. In fact, a vacation in Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort might be the key in unraveling the secrets of skiing popularity.

Mariborsko Pohorje's central geological feature is the Mariborsko Pohorje, a mountain that has a peak which rises almost a mile above sea level. Geologically, this is not extremely unique, and from the point of view of unenlightened skiers, the Mariborsko Pohorje is just another ski resort with more than 22 miles of slopes for cross-country skiing and almost 25 miles of alpine skiing.

More than 50% of the alpine skiing trails are considered as blue runs. About 40% of the trails are categorized as red runs. And the rest are marked as black runs. This new ski resort is obviously catering primarily to the intermediate and confident skiers. It is not the highest peak in Europe, but with its extensive snow making facilities, the entire ski resort of Mariborsko Pohorje is assured of 100 days of snow. With this in mind, the extensive network of skiing trails, which is supported by efficient facilities, is not the secret to the popularity of skiing.

The secret is in the competitions in the new ski resort of Mariborsko Pohorje. Some of these competitions are the Golden Fox Trophy, the World Cup Telemark Competition, and the FIS World Youth Championship. The Golden Fox Trophy is an alpine skiing competition held every January for women. Based around the Slovene Ski Center, this competition attracts more than 25,000 fans. The World Cup Telemark Competition is geared towards advancing a different type of Alpine skiing that was invented in Norway. It is a skiing that requires the skier to bend one knee so that the lower leg is parallel to the slope and then have the other bent knee facing forward with the lower leg perpendicular to the ground with one ski placed in front of the other. The telemark skiing is expected to be included in the winter Olympics. And finally, the FIS (Federation Internationale de Ski) World Youth Championship is a race of downhill skiing participated by the younger generation.

And still another secret is the night skiing held during most nights in the new ski resort of Mariborsko Pohorje. Bright torches are strategically placed to light the ski slopes, which total more than four miles. The slope for night skiing is probably the longest in all of Europe. Few ski resorts offer night skiing. The uniqueness of night skiing kept attracting new followers of skiing and engaging new believers.
