Manchester United: A Giant under Resurrection?

By: Kev Rob

Whenever and wherever people have talked about English football and the English Premier League, one team has always found a mention in the modern history of English football and it is none other than Manchester United. It was a force to be reckoned with some time back under the able management of arguably the greatest manager of the modern era, Sir Alex Ferguson. From rising to the topmost tier of the English League, winning the league for a record number of seasons to going on to win the Champions League and the domestic competitions and cups, this team has seen it all. From the days of Cantona to Beckham and Ronaldo and then moving forward to Rooney and now Lukaku and Pogba, the Red Devils have been one of the most flamboyant the English Premier League in the modern times.
Back in the last decade when Manchester United was a real force and the opponents literally feared playing them, Sir Alex Ferguson had been an influential figure at the club. Not only did he lead the team to glory for a record number of times both in the domestic and the international level by winning the league and the Champions League, he was a father figure to help many players to build their careers. From Rooney to Ronaldo, everyone thrived under the leadership of the esteemed manager who was respected by one and all. Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to their last Premier League title, with Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney playing a crucial role in that season.
With the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson came a massive dip in the form of the club and this stature, The outgoing manager was replaced by David Moyes who could not cope up with the pressure of managing such a big club and had to bow out after the Red Devils finished at the seventh spot. Years of mediocrity followed with Louis Van Gaal replacing Moyes. Though the club are spending big in the transfer market, they are not getting the desired results. Van Gaal remained at the club for a few seasons and led the side to the Champions League competition. The club secured a top four finish for the first time since the departure of Ferguson. Van Gaal changed the style but it was not welcomed by the fans and players alike. The manager was finally fired after spending in excess of two hundred million pounds in the transfer market and failing to win big titles at the club.
The outgoing manager was replaced by Jose Mourinho who had earlier proven himself in the English League after guiding Chelsea to win the Premier League title in 2013-14 season. He went on to strengthen the squad after addressing the issues bothering the club and the positions that were needed to be stacked up. Manchester United came into the news again after the club managed to secure service of Paul Pogba for a world record transfer fee and the side managed to seal a Champions League spot for themselves this season.
They have already signed Lukaku, Matic and Lindelof this summer transfer window. Jose Mourinho will be looking to take the club to where it was under Alex Ferguson after winning the Europa league and the English league cup the last season.
