Is The Gym An Obstacle To Muscle Building or Weight Loss?

By: Francesco A. Castano

Many who pursue muscle gain or weight loss feel that joining a local gym is a requirement for achieving results, and so, following a rather food indulging Christmas season, millions crowd local gyms, signing up for a 3+ year membership, believing that they've just taken the first step towards a bodybuilding or weight loss transformation. But if we analyze the number of people who actually continue attending the gym after their contractual commitment, we find that the once motivated fitness enthusiast fueled with zeal for substantial change suddenly fails to walk through the gym's front door as February approaches.

Many believe that laziness is the natural enemy that prevents most from pursuing a pattern of muscle building or weight loss consistency, and never analyze whether in fact the gym environment itself may obstruct desire for many, eventually causing most to quit the pursuit of muscle building or weight loss completely.

Yet, how could this be? Is it possible for the gym to reduce motivation, when in fact such an environment should be helpful towards achieving significant results? The answer will be found within the first few workouts, and clearly becomes one of the primary reasons why many lose their acceptance of regular gym attendance long before they produce any noticeable changes.

Let's pretend that you are prepared for an intense bodybuilding workout session, and you encounter one or more friends who decide to attend at the same time as you. What will most likely happen next? Will the group experience the best weight training and cardiovascular workout session of the year, or will the next two hours focus upon discussing yesterday's episode of the Biggest Loser? Let's instead say you attend the gym and happen not to locate any acquaintances, but as you scan the territory, quickly sense that every machine you need for your weight training workout is occupied, with a 20 minute wait for each. Do you think this will lead to an effective bodybuilding workout session, or encourage a visit to the local fast food drive thru to try and munch the bitterness away?

Also, let's not neglect the most many additional common excuses to skip the gym for a day, such as bad weather (five feet of unexpected snow fall might make traveling the highway difficult), car breakdown (a flat tire always interferes with melting a spare tire!), and traffic (couldn't be late for lunch)! Some may believe that these unexpected circumstances cannot occur often, but once consistency is hampered, and a workout is skipped, the mind becomes far more lenient of the next skipped weight training workout session, and this attitude will eventually lead to a brand new habit, one which is much more enjoyable; furniture sitting, without the distraction of a gym visit for your weight training workout session.

So, what is the alternative? I perform my bodybuilding at home, having gained over 60 pounds of muscle and lost 50 pounds of body fat, without use of a gym, proving that neither muscle increase nor fat loss requires waiting in line for machines or spending large amounts of money on expensive bodybuilding gym dues. In fact, my bodybuilding success was achieved in my basement, with inexpensive weight training equipment, and I was able to produce far more consistency with my weight training workout regimen than most who must contend with the often frustrating gym environment, specifically because I am in control of my surroundings, and can eliminate distractions that obstruct my ability to perform my weight training workout.

This is not to say that achieving a bodybuilder physique or producing consistent weight loss is impossible through gym training, as many with such memberships achieve very impressive results, but for those who have the option to purchase some basic weight training equipment, I believe doing so is far more convenient, offers a controlled environment, and is significantly less expensive over a several year period than joining a local gym. Achieving success in muscle building or weight loss is in large part due to mental concentration, a factor which suffers greatly when subjected to an uncontrollable group of circumstances, and this is why I have constantly opted for training at home, and achieved extremely impressive muscle building and weight loss results specifically because I have constantly been able to move forward with my weight training workout sessions in a systematic, controlled fashion.

Don't frown upon performing your bodybuilding workout routines at home until you've experienced the inconveniences of attending a gym, but if you choose to join a local gym facility, please make sure not to sign a long term deal until you have consistently trained for at least two months and have ensured yourself that the distractions and roadblocks will not interfere with remaining committed to your bodybuilding workout.
