Ipad Apps for Homework

By: Mel Joelle

Many people purchase an iPad for entertainment or work. With its versatile touch screen, portability and huge library of apps, it’s a fantastic device for either option. However, there is another group that can benefit from owning an iPad: Students. There are several useful apps that can help high school and college students with their studies.

One of the most ubiquitous homework apps available for the iPad is the note-taking app Evernote. Students who have bad handwriting or who have trouble keeping their notes organized will find Evernote to be a particularly useful app. However, it’s not just for the disorganized. Evernote lets users take written notes, as well as voice memos and photographs. Then, it syncs all of this to the web, allowing users to pull it when necessary from the web or their iPad. The result is notes that are more accessible and better organized than they ever could be if taken by hand in a notebook. Because of this, completing assignments that need to reference notes taken during lectures can be easier than ever.

For remembering assignments, one useful app available for download is myHomework by Rorigo Neri. The app combines calendar functionality with the ability to write down assignments and due dates. Students can go into the app and view the assignments they have due for any coming date. By having a separate app from a typical calendar app, myHomework makes it easy to view assignments separate from the rest of their personal calendar. The app is available as a free download in the iTunes app store.

Of course, there are also iPad apps available to help complete homework assignments. One such app is the free dictionary and thesaurus app from Dictionary.com. Available as a free download, the app can be convenient for anyone writing a paper and needing help with the definition of a word or looking for a new word to use. This app can be very useful for anyone who has trouble with the meanings or spellings of words, or anyone who wants to expand their vocabulary. The dictionary app can also be useful when dealing with assignments in an area that a student may not have prior knowledge of.

Finally, the iPad isn’t just limited to scheduling and spelling apps. One great app that can actually save students money is the Graphing Calculator by Appcylon. Normally, a graphing calculator can cost anywhere from $50 to $70. Available for $1.99 in the iTunes app store, the app combines the feature of a scientific and graphic calculator. It also has the ability to email the results from plotted equations, so manual graphing of equations solved by the calculator isn’t even necessary! Students using Graphic Calculator can just email and print off the results.

Other apps, such as Documents to Go, can students pull up PowerPoint presentations and Word documents on their iPads. Between all of these and the dozens of other apps available to help complete homework, the iPad is not just a toy. It’s also a tool to help students become more efficient.
