According to PayltGreen, if those 22 Million customers used electronic transactions rather than hard-paper options, the U.S. would save more than 9 million pounds of paper and avoid releasing 25 millions pounds of greenhouse gases each year.

Going green isn’t as hard or costly as it sounds. The campaign raised $1 million that will be used to plant one million trees. This may seem like a lot of money, but take into consideration the time, money and man hours it takes to print, process, and mail bank statements. A Citizens Financial Group launched a program called “Green$ense” in 2008 to encourage consumers to make electronic banking transactions through e-credit card processing, in order to reduce the use of paper. It rewarded customers with ten cents for every e-payment or transaction they made, up to $10 a month and $120 a year. According to bank officials, the program has paid customers more than $2 million. Again, this may seem like a large amount, but keep in mind the costs of man-power, resources, and time necessary for in-person transactions plus the added revenue e-commerce can create by bringing in customers not able to shop in person.
