Getaway in Vermont

There are many reasons to visit Vermont: the magnificent fall foliage, great skiing in winter, lakes, streams and rivers to visit in spring and summer, and one of the best places on earth to see covered bridges. To make one’s visit a true indulgence, plan a stay at one of the areas truly fine bed and breakfast inns.

Southern Vermont offers small towns with many buildings displaying white steeples. One may visit the Bennington Battle Monument or a well-known and exceptional example of a Victorian Mansion. Visit one of the many farms, open to the public and ride the Green Mountain Flyer train.

There are lovely and luxurious bed and breakfast accommodations in Southern Vermont. Inns built in the 1850’s may offer views of Mt. Anthony and are within walking distance to beautiful waterfalls. One may visit nearby shops and restaurants in quaint settings. Accommodations provide such comforts as extremely indulgent twin, queen, or king size beds adorned with high quality linens. Private baths with Turkish cotton towels and Vermont soaps will leave one feeling pampered. Enjoy air conditioning in summer and cozy fireplaces in winter. Relax on the in-room sofa while watching the flat panel television or using the in room Wi-Fi. After enjoying a full Vermont breakfast, borrow a bicycle in spring or summer and tour the area or in winter, ski nearby slopes. Return in the evening, partake of the dinner packages offered, and perhaps enjoy a delicious truffle with the turndown service.

In Central Vermont, be sure to visit Quechee Gorge, also called Vermont’s Grand Canyon. There is magnificent scenery in the Green Mountains, which also offer visitors many trails to hike. There is skiing in winter at Killington Peak and in summer good trekking adventures there. This area of Vermont offers many covered bridges, and one may visit an English Manor known as Wilson Castle. For a more cerebral pursuit, visit the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and for just plain fun be sure to visit the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory.

The bed and breakfast inns in Central Vermont are charming and luxurious. Built in the early 1800’s, try a stay at a classic Victorian Bed and breakfast or at an Adirondack style inn. Walk to restaurants with fine dining or those offering casual fare. There are many charming shops to visit, including many antique shops. For outdoorsmen there are many choices available depending on the season. There is amazing skiing at Sugar Bush and Stowe or in warmer weather there is hiking, biking, hunting and fishing. Before embarking on one’s adventure, enjoy a full country Vermont breakfast offered at the bed and breakfast. Later one will enjoy fine accommodations with comfortable beds, private baths, microwaves, lovely sitting areas and wi-fi. In the common areas, one may enjoy a hot tub, sauna or wet bar, and some establishments offer fine dining in house.

Northern Vermont borders Canada and offers visitors amazing natural beauty including Lake Champlain and the Lake Champlain Islands. Opportunities to swim, fish, sail, and boat abound. There are scenic train rides and Vermont’s famous covered bridges. Another interesting destination is the Ethan Allen Homestead and Museum. One may ski at Stowe or Jay Peak, and for the not so faint of heart there is an aerial tram to the top of Jay Peak.

In Northern Vermont, stay at a bed and breakfast inn surrounded my perennial gardens and offering panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. If you prefer, arrange a stay at a 1790’s estate, once a carriage house, which is a blend of a classic Vermont inn and bed and breakfast inn.
