Generate More Traffic

By: Mel Joelle

Every site can benefit from engaging, well-written content, but to generate more traffic, you need to delve deeper to compete with the big boys.

There is one vital element that every site owner blindly oversteps; web surfers rarely read what’s on a page – they scan. This is why when you’re looking to generate more traffic, you must get to the point quickly, state it concisely, and stick to simple guidelines to engage the audience.

Here are the top 5 guidelines for attracting, and engaging more visitors;

5. Convey a consistent message and tone. Your message is the underlying meaning of what you’re trying to say. Your tone is the style in which you communicate that message. These two key elements are intrinsically linked; meaning you cannot have one without the other. Think about your target audience, and then review your copy. Does it cater to its audience?

4. Avoid long paragraphs. Nothing is more intimidating that reading long blocks of dense text. Break your copy into small paragraphs, and try to use bullets or number formats for easier reading and understanding.

3. Write short, simple sentences. The bottom line is, get to the point. Try to limit the length of your sentences to approximately fifteen words. However, don’t sacrifice the quality of your message for the sake of brief sentences. Try to be as brief as possible and avoid run-on sentences.

2. Keep the message above the fold. This is one of the most important aspects to follow when you want to generate more traffic. All vital content should be visible without having to scroll down. The main event or importance of the article should always appear above the fold. This doesn’t mean you must have a site that fits into a one-screen section. Just make sure you have “the hook,” or your most engaging content above the fold.

1. Create strong and concise headlines. All the research concludes that you have about 5 seconds to grab the attention of the crowd. If your headline doesn’t capture your visitors’ attention, they certainly won’t read what follows. Writing great headlines, taglines and captions do more to generate more traffic than any other method.

Once you’ve applied all of these guidelines, you’re ready to expose your site to millions. Stumble it; a website that allows you to refer sites to the more than six million stumble-upon users. Stumble-upon users are able to refer your site to other users, thereby helping to generate more traffic, and increasing your regular visitors. Keeping them coming back is your next challenge.

Lastly, every successful site will arouse the curiosity of the visitor. This not only will help generate more traffic, but it keeps the audience returning for more.

Review your website to make sure you’ve applied all the guidelines and check to see if anything requires improvement.

• Interesting content

• Consistent message and tone that targets a clearly defined audience

• Short to-the-point content that’s concise

• The ‘hook’ can be found above the fold

• Site contains easy-to-read text, broken up into several paragraphs

The best way to generate more traffic is by keeping your visitor in mind. When you develop a good site that is engaging, and user-friendly, you will attract everyone’s attention.
