Characteristics of High Quality Replacement Parts

By: James Marshell

• OEM or genuine replacement parts (for example Fein Replacement Parts, Hitachi Replacement Parts etc.)
• Aftermarket replacement parts (Parts manufactured by other than OEM)
• Refurbished replacement parts (Defected parts converted into usable replacement parts by removing the defects)

If you’ve made a firm decision of buying OEM parts then you are probably going to get the best quality (in some cases aftermarket parts prove to be a better replacement but that’s rare). However, if you are looking to purchase aftermarket replacement parts then you must be cautious about the quality of the part that goes into your expensive power tool.

Sometimes, a subpar replacement part can cause a greater damage to your power tool giving you additional frustration and financial turmoil. Most of the times, the intention behind getting an aftermarket part is to save money which is quite understandable. However, if you can get original Jet replacement parts at reasonable price then buy the Jet. Don’t risk your tool, it’s not worth it.

But if there is a considerable price difference, then check for the following factors to assess the quality:

Exceptionally low prices should trigger your vigilance instantly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check if any other company is offering similar prices, if this is a common trend then there is a better chance of getting better quality. It simply means the genuine manufacturer is charging a high premium. However, if you don’t find any other similarly priced alternative then you should refrain from buying.

Usually first impression says it all. You will know the quality right away as soon as you hold the replacement part in your hand. The finishing touches, built quality and manufacturing expertise will either impress you or will leave a lot to be desired. If it is the latter observation, then you shouldn’t be getting the replacement part.

Check for minor protrusions and aberrations. Your attention to detail will reveal whether a particular replacement part holds up to the quality standards you expect from it. If you are unsure about something, it’s better to let it go and choose the option where you can’t go wrong.

This is the golden rule. A part, whether it is genuine or aftermarket, should fit your tool perfectly. A little too loose or a little too tight is where the problem begins. If you have a Hitachi power drill with a burnt switch and you just purchased an aftermarket switch that doesn’t fit well enough, you should return it right away. Buy original Hitachi replacement parts where aftermarket parts fail to deliver the feel and finesse of the genuine.
