Carpet Flooring Options for Your Home - Which Carpeting is Best for You?

By: Robert Thomson

Before shopping for carpet flooring in your home, you'll want to consider which type of carpeting is best suited to your needs. Will your new floors be in a high-traffic area? Or will they be more like a plush, welcoming respite after a hard day's work? When buying carpet, you'll hear terms like "loop", "pile", "Berber", "plush" and "frieze". But you don't need to be a carpet flooring expert to make sense of the terminology. Here's how to differentiate between the major types of carpet, and how to choose the perfect one for any room in your home.

Carpet for High Traffic Areas

If the area you're carpeting is always busy with high foot traffic, you'll want to look for multi-level loop or level loop carpets. These terms refer to looped threads of yarn that are "tufted" to give the carpet its texture and appearance. Multi-level loop, like its name, is loops of yarn in different heights. Carpet made like this can withstand a lot of wear and tear and is great for hallways, stairs, entryways and children's rooms. Frieze carpet has twisted tufts of yearn that are both tough and durable. It's also known as "trackless" carpet because it almost completely covers footprints. Berber carpet is made with thicker yarn which increases its durability. These carpets often come in different colors with flecks of darker or lighter colors in random patterns. It's also relatively inexpensive and resistant to stains. For this reason, Berber carpet is often used in schools and offices, as well as high-traffic rooms in the home.

Carpet for the Softer Side of Life

If you're looking for carpet flooring that will embrace your feet with every step, consider plusher, softer styles like luxurious Saxony brand. Saxony carpeting is made using level cut loops that are sheared off at about a half-inch or less in length. These piles are woven and packed together very tightly, which gives Saxony carpet its immensely soft feel. Because of its unique style, this type of carpet is ideal for formal areas in the home. It's also available in a wide range of colors to help you choose the perfect look to coordinate a room.

What Type of Material is Best?

Like carpet types, there is no "one size fits all" approach for carpet material. The most popular material by far is Nylon. It's durable, easy to clean, and can even be used as the basis for more eco-friendly carpet flooring. In addition to Nylon, you can also buy polypropylene carpeting, which is inexpensive and resists fading and bleaching from the sunlight more than other types of carpet. Polyester or PET carpet is great if you're looking to "think green". This environmentally friendly carpet is also highly stain resistant and available in a wide range of vibrant, exciting colors.

These are just a few of the points to consider when buying carpet flooring for your home. Better understanding of the types of carpet and the material used to make it will help you decide on the perfect fit for your home and lifestyle.
