Care on a Regular Basis

By: Mark Lucasa

Furniture with upholstery requires care on a regular basis. While vacuum cleaning the floors, you can give a few minutes to vacuum clean the furniture also so that surface soil is removed. This will prevent the dirt from embedding itself into the fabric fibers. Keep on turning the cushions that are loose; it will enhance the life of the furniture. Furthermore, it distributes the wear evenly and slows down the process of de-shaping. It is best to avoid exposing the furniture to the direct sunlight. Your upholstered furniture will quickly fade with because of this. Particular care has to be taken if it is of silk being very delicate.

Smoke, cooking fumes, and other airborne pollutants cause damage to the fabric. It is sometimes very difficult to protect your upholstered items from cooking fumes, but installing some proper ventilation will reduce this damage greatly. To avoid stains and dirt on your upholstered furniture, the whole family will have to following a strict set of rules. No eating in the living room; and no pets are allowed on the furniture. Only chairs that have machine washable covers should be used in the dining room.

It is very simple to blot up a stain on any fabric that has been treated with a spray on fabric protector. When a spill occurs, try to blot up as much as possible with a clean & dry towel. Avoid rubbing as it causes further damage to the fabric. A spot remover can also be used on upholstery.

However, before using any cleaning solution, you should test it in an inconspicuous area to ensure that it will not create any damage to the fabric. Always be sure to carefully follow all the cleaning instructions that are written on the container. The upholstery should be cleaned every few years by hiring a professional service.
