High intensity training (HIT) is form of exercise that involves exercising at a high effort for short periods of time, followed by recovery. For exercise to qualify as high intensity, experts say that your heart rate must reach 75% of your max, though HIT could get it up to 90% or even 100%. When you reach this heart rate zone, you are burning the most amount of calories and fat. Not only is HIT effective, but it's as efficient as any other exercise.

With the bursts and intervals characteristic of HIT, the capacity of the lungs to contain oxygen is enhanced far more so than traditional aerobic workouts.

Compared to other types of exercise, high intensity training can prevent, control, or even reduce metabolic syndrome symptoms at a much higher level. Metabolic syndrome is a condition where several diseases exist and are complicating each other. Risk factors include hormone changes, aging, and a lack of exercise.

Another benefit of HIT is that it can build body mass and bone density in older women who are postmenopausal and have lower estrogen levels. It also helps prevent or slow down osteoporosis.
