Are Generic Drugs As Effective As Brand Name Drugs?

By: Kelsie Wolf

There are various myths about Generic Drugs related to their quality, ingredients, cost etc. Around 9 out of 10 myths are just false. Here we are going to discuss various facts related to generic drugs like what are they? how they are different from branded drugs? why their cost is low? Etc.

A generic drug is simply a branded drug that uses a different name. They have exactly the same dosage, intended use, effects, side effects, route of administration, risks, safety, and strength as the original drug. In other words, their pharmacological effects are exactly the same as those of their brand-name counterparts. e.g metformin is a generic drug used for diabetes. Brand name for metformin is Glycophage. Ismetropol is a generic drug used for hypertension, its brand name is Lopressor.

It is true that generic drugs are cheaper then branded drugs because research costs, the costs incurred in proving it is safe, the costs to market, transport and other costs are not included in the cost of generic drugs. There is little difference between generic drugs and their brand name versions other than the money we can save.

Before gaining FDA approval to sell generic drugs, all companies have to show that their generic versions have the same active ingredients, strength, dosage form and route of administration as the original brand name. Furthermore, companies prove that the generic is effectively absorbed and distributed at a similar level with the brand name drug. Finally generics are held to the same standards of manufacturing as all other drugs.

There is a common misbelief that generic drugs take longer to work. But FDA has approved that generic drugs work as fast and as effectively as the original brand-name products. There is another myth that generic drugs are manufactured in poorer-quality facilities or are inferior  in quality to brand-name drugs. But it’s not true, FDA applies the same standards for all drug manufacturing facilities.

The only real differences are in the color, shape, size, taste and most importantly cost. Anyone can easily compare prices visiting an online pharmacy. If the medication does not come in generic we can talk to our doctor about trying a different medication in the same class of drugs. For example, statins are known to treat cholesterol.

Brand-name drugs can be as much as three times the cost of their generic counterparts. So, generic drugs can be used in place of branded drugs as FDA has approved generics to be safe and reliable drugs.
