An preamble to the World Match Play to be played later on this year in Spain

The new set-up will see the 16-man field separated into four groups of four players, seedings based upon their Official World Golf Ranking:

Inside groups of four, each player will take on each other in a round robin format over full 18-hole matches. (NB. Every match will complete 18 holes every time).

Points will be awarded based upon win, tie or loss. The leading player from each grouping will qualify for the semi-final knock out phase. (Total number of holes won will be used to decide tied positions).

Semi-finals played over 36 holes in head-to-head match play.

Semi-final winners will progress to the Volvo World Match Play Championship Final. Semi-final losers will contest the Volvo World Match Play Championship Consolation Match.

The Volvo World Match Play Championship Final will be held over 36 holes in head-to-head match play.

The Volvo World Match Play Championship Consolation Match will be played over 18 holes in head-to head-match play.

The Prize Money for the 2009 Volvo World Match Play Championship will be €3,250,000 split as follows:
1st: €750,000
2nd: €450,000
3rd: €250,000
4th: €200,000
Runner up in group: €150,000
3rd in Group: €130,000
4th in Group: €120,000

The competition is hotting up right now and there is a golden possibility to see the top 16 of their profession in full swing, please excuse the pun!

There is masses to do in and see in the quarter for example you might explore the whitewashed villages of Casares or Pueblo Mijas, the historical city of Rhonda, visit the apes on the Rock of Gibraltar

You may possibly have a more relaxing day on one of the numerous local beaches, or stroll around the harbour at Puerto Duquesa, 5 minutes away, or Soto Grande, 15 minutes away.
