You Are What You Focus On…

Have you ever watched a commercial on television about food and suddenly felt the urge to eat? Have you ever coughed in a crowded room? If you have, I'd bet someone coughed after you, probably more than one other person. Ever watched somebody yawn and found you yawning? That is the power of suggestion. We naturally move toward whatever we focus our attention on. The more you think about something, the stronger hold that thought has on you.

That is why repeating thoughts of “I have to lose weight…or stop worrying…or get out of debt” is self-defeating. It keeps you focused on the negative and what you don’t want. It is like announcing, “I am never going to do what my mom did.” You are setting yourself up to repeat it. Most diets don’t work because they keep you thinking about food all the time, guaranteeing that you will be hungry. In the same way, a person who keeps repeating to themselves “I can’t do that” sets themselves up to fail! Instead you should focus your attention on the result that you desire. Start repeating positive affirmations, “I am successful in all I do, I am healthy and at my ideal weight, or I am financially free and live a life of abundance.”

Whatever gets your attention arouses your emotions. Your emotions are the captain of your life, they create your thoughts, and without realizing it you obey them and act on what you feel. The more you focus on “I don’t want to do this or I don’t want to be that, the stronger it draws you into its web and the more entangled you become. If your attention or thoughts are drawn to something negative, immediately turn your mind onto something positive and the negative will lose it power. It is far more effective than trying to fight (thus keeping the focus on) the negative. So when negativity knocks on your door, don’t answer it, act as if you are not home.

Sometimes this may mean physically leaving a negative situation. Get up and turn of the television set, stop watching CNN-Consistently Negative News! Walk away from a group that is gossiping. Leave the group of complainers in front of the water cooler. To avoid being bit, stay away from an angry dog. Do whatever you have to do to turn your attention to something positive.

Positive or negative thoughts have a very strong influence on life. If you are serious about changing your life for the better, no matter what it is you want to change in your life, you must manage your mind and fill it with thoughts that are good, positive and full of gratitude for what you have and where you are today.

Suggestions to manage your mind and defeat the negative thoughts:

• Turn off the television

• Listen to upbeat music

• Read books on self improvement – A mind once expanded can never go back

• Repeat positive affirmations throughout your day

• Give thanks throughout your day- “If you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily.” ~Gerald Good

• Encourage and give sincere compliments to others

• Read inspirational quotes- uplift your mind
