YMC Fashion Designer Fraser Moss at Home

By: Paige Price

The 14th century English author Geoffrey Chaucer once observed that “there’s never a new fashion but it’s old”. Likewise, Fraser Moss, co-founder of the YMC clothing label, acknowledges he’s indebted to the Sixties Suede Boys and other fashion designers of that era who have provided him with inspiration.

Indeed, the YMC label was born out of the belief that a person’s clothing should combine the old with the new and reflect his or her individuality. It should be a mix of high street and vintage so as to avoid strict loyalty to a certain label or seasonal trend. The name for the label stands for You Must Create and was taken from the mouth of American industrial designer Raymond Loewy who once said, “you must create your own design style”. The label’s fans include Badly Drawn Boy, Liam and Noel Gallagher, and Hayden Christensen.

The Moss family home, with its strong vintage flavour, is also heavily indebted to sixties’ fashions. Situated in Brighton, Fraser shares the place with his wife Jody and their children Phoenix, four, and Biba, two. The couple decided to move there from Hackney a couple of years ago to give their kids a more relaxed upbringing outside of the city. They also ended up selling a lot of their furniture to replace it with childproof and child-friendly items.

It wasn’t easy leaving London, however. Jody had co-founded the successful clothing company 20th Century Vintage, which was selling through Liberty on Regent Street, and Fraser had to switch a Tube ride of a few minutes for a train commute of four-and-a-half hours. However, living in Brighton has its benefits. As Fraser says, it’s like being on holiday sometimes, they often go for a walk along the pier, and there’s a good school within walking distance of the house.

Moss is passionate about music and it shows, given his nearly ceiling-high stacks of sixties vinyls and Blue Brothers-style music. Jody likes to keep the books around the fireplace colour co-ordinated, and in the kitchen there’s an old-fashioned Smeg fridge sharing the space with some unusual ceramics. Phoenix’s room is an explosion of colour inspired by DC Comics while the master bedroom takes on a seventies feel with its chocolate-toned velvet curtains and deep purple wall paint. As a whole, the house is a delightfully eclectic mix enlivened by catchy music that fits the Moss family like a glove—or, should we say, a snug knit cardigan.
