Working Productively with a Wedding Photographer

By: Vern Conrad

Hiring a wedding photographer is not that complicated if you know your local market and you've got a bit of time to invest into your search, but knowing how to get the best from that service is a different story. You'll have to very carefully organize the event and account for the photographer's needs as best as possible, otherwise they might not be able to give you an ideal service.

First, of course, you're going to need enough time to find the right photographer for the job. As we said above, a little knowledge of the market around you can never hurt if you want to get an initial idea of what direction to look in. If you live in a larger area, there might be even more options to choose from, requiring you to very carefully narrow down your selection to a few photographers that can pull off the ideal job. Look at the portfolios that they have at their websites (good photographers should have those in all cases nowadays) and figure out which of those photographers have the most ideal styles for your needs.

During the actual wedding, you're going to need to set aside some time for the photo sessions. Doing this properly takes more time than you'd imagine, so make sure you have at least an hour to spare, but in most cases you're going to need even more. Don't rush, as this is something that's going to last forever and you wouldn't want your wedding photos to be ruined for good because you wanted to move on.

After the wedding, you'll need to stay in touch with your photographer in order to finalize the printouts and determine which photos are going to be used in the end. Usually the photographer will give you a collection of all the photos they've taken during your wedding, and you'll have to go through them and get back to the photographer with your choice. Again, don't rush this and don't pick too many photos, as it's likely that many of them will have more or less the same features.

Editing is another thing that good photographers can do for you, but it should be done sparingly. There's a difference between touching up a photo to make it look a bit better and clean out any defects from the shooting, but another story if the photographer completely changes the picture and makes it unrecognizable. It all comes down to good taste, so you should be very careful in your choice of photographer and hire someone who knows how to best edit your photos with modesty and taste.

In the end, if you've picked the ideal photographer, you should be able to enjoy your wedding photos for many years to come, and use them to reminisce of the wonderful days of your wedding. If you just pay attention when choosing your photographer, you should be able to have everything sorted out without any unnecessary hassle and without having to pay an extraordinarily large price for the whole deal.
