Woodworking Tools For Beginners

By: James Marshell

There are experts who love to work with exotic tools, the ones who buy DeWalt power tools for woodworking that are not only expensive but are complex to work with. If you are an amateur woodworker you donít need expensive and latest machinery in your workshop to start your dream. Here is what you need:

1. WORK BENCH

You can buy cordless tools and lots of fancy stuff but if you donít have a workbench you are doing it wrong. Its woodworking 101 to have a workbench in your workshop and your workbench should be large enough to accommodate beginnersí projects while leaving a comfortable amount of room to spare. Fit your workbench with vises as it is necessary to get precise and accurate measurements.

2. MEASURING TAPE

Thatís pretty much a given for any woodworker. If you are not bringing in planning and measuring into your craft then you arenít going to succeed. Yes, expert craftsmen build masterpieces without taking any measurements but they have decades of experience with dimensions and measurements on their fingertips.

Always try to take measurements in smaller units as there is less chance of error. For example if your measurements are in inches then there is a bigger chance of error when compared to the measurements in centimeters. Learn how different unit systems work.

3. HAMMER, SAW AND SCREWDRIVERS

Out of these tools, saw is the most important one for the woodworker as he has to cut hundreds of pieces of wood and timber. Different types of saws are available in the market and you can buy one according to your budget. Most common types are crosscut and coping saws that are handheld, but if you are going to do a lot of projects then itís a smart move to invest in a power saw. Itís easier to use a power saw and cuts are more accurate and precise with lesser chance of human error.

Driving nails, fasteners and staples into the wood are a vital part of woodworking and for that you need a great hammer. Remember, there are various types of hammers available in the market but not all of them are tailored to your use. A hammer thatís heavy may break the piece of timber you are working on and a light hammer may not have enough force in it to drive a nail into the wooden surface and thatís why buying the right hammer is significant for your jobs.

Apart from hammers and saws, you also need a set of screwdrivers with different sizes and heads, especially Phillips and flat head.
4. SANDER, DRILL AND WRENCH

In some woodworking jobs you would be using bolts instead of nails so you might also need a set of wrenches. Having a set of Allen Wrenches is also a great idea.

After cutting, hammering and performing various tasks on the wood, it becomes rough and has jagged edges here and there. In order to smooth the surface and finish of your project you will also need a good quality sander.

Sometimes you will also need to drill holes in the wooden surface and for that there is nothing better than a power drill. Power drills are cheap, convenient to use and you can perform various tasks using it. Buy Makita power tools for this type of tasks as they offer great value and perform reliably for years to come.

Apart from these products and items, you would also need glue, adhesive, pencils, level and a stapler. A smart woodworker also keeps a First Aid Kit handy.
