Windows 8 is Finer Than Frog Hair

By: Albert Marrero

So the Windows 8 Beta has been out, but they definitely revealed more than a beta today. Windows 8 Consumer Preview is here. And boy am I excited. Windows 8 will do for PC’s and Tablets what email did for smartphones. It’s that damn good.

I’ve had a chance to play with it a bit, although not nearly as much as I’d like to, and I was amazed. Looking back, Windows 7 was smooth, familiar, and a much, much, much needed upgrade to Vista. Along with Windows ME, Vista was probably a product that shouldn’t have been. (However, it did have some cool features, like Aero.) Then we moved to Windows 7, which was really secure. Now, we’re getting into Windows 8 and it is cutting-edge, secure, fun to play with, moves seamlessly from touchscreen to mouse/keyboard, and is a social media sync’ing genius.

Windows 8 is a breeze to operate, once you get the hang of it. I hope, like some previous versions of Windows, that when you first get the computer or tablet, or install Windows 8, it takes you through a quick tutorial, much in the same way video games do. In the gaming world, you have to follow the on screen tutorials until you’ve proven that you understand and can execute the controls (in some games), or else, you can’t move forward in the game. This is perfect because once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you can move on. Without this, you’d be stuck trying to “figure out” what does what, and may be able to finish the game without ever knowing how to perform a certain task that would have made things so much more fun or easy. If Windows 8 ships with something along those lines, the learning curve is toast, and folks will understand why this OS is the best thing since fried onions on a ranch burger.

Touchscreen integration is where this OS lives and thrives. Windows 8 loves the edges and swiping from right to left will take you the Windows essentials. Swiping from Left to Right will take you to the Apps. It gets more involved than that, but it’s pretty basic and works fine. The split keyboard option is designed for thumb use. Like the Guinness guys say, “Brilliant!” Another aspect that is noticeable on both the PC and touchscreen versions is the speed at which this OS flies. Zippy. Which simply put, “feels” responsive. It’s undeniably satisfying to be able to whip through apps and pages at a quick speed and with great efficiency.

Sync is huge in Windows 8, as with the Metro design, we’re looking through “windows” at our news feed, social media updates, photo syncs, and our upcoming events in calendar. That’s going to be key moving forward, as Windows 8, especially from what I’ve read around the web, is arguably the best OS out there for this kind of thing.

Security is tighter than a snare drum, and we wouldn’t expect anything less. With early adopters and just the possibilities for businesses to really use this OS on touch screen PC’s, security must be robust. With IE 10, malware and phishing are facing the most formidable hurdle since Houdini had to climb out of chains while submerged.

There’s countless more aspects about this awesome OS that I’d love to chat about, but I don’t wanna ruin the surprise. When this OS is released, and folks start realizing that it’s the best thing since sliced bread, Apple is going to have it’s hands full. I fully believe that Microsoft can really gain some serious ground in the tablet market and I’m looking forward to seeing that happen. I’ve always been a PC fanboy, and seeing this OS just got me excited. Like getting picked to be the oil man on the Hawaiian Tropics tour bus, I’m stoked!
