Why it is so important to take good care of your feet

There are a number of reasons why a person's feet might hurt. Sometimes it is a simple fix, like buying the right size of shoe. Sometimes a person may suffer from flat feet. Other times, a person may have bunions or plantar fasciitis, or sometimes a person is just wearing an extremely uncomfortable shoe. Whatever the reason, sore, aching feet can put a damper on what would otherwise be a fun time. Instead of looking for adventure, you may find yourself looking for a place to sit down. Poor foot care can lead to a poor quality of life. That is why it is so important to take good care of your feet.

One of the best things you can do for yourself to maximize the comfort of your feet is to get a proper foot measurement. A lot of times people assume they know what shoe size they wear. Some people rely on a foot measurement which was taken 10 years ago. Believe it or not, your shoe size can change. It is best to have your feet measured 1-2 times per year. While your feet will not typically shrink, they may actually grow. Ligaments in the feet can relax and loosen for a variety of reasons, such as pregnancy or certain medications. It is wise to have your foot measured regularly in order to get a properly fitting shoe. When getting your feet measured, it is also best to go later in the day than first thing in the morning. Most people experience a little bit of swelling in their feet throughout the day, and it is necessary to getting an accurate measurement of your foot.

Flat feet may be another reason for having an uncomfortable foot. When you have flat feet, you have little or no arch in your foot to help support the impact of your steps. This means that the impact is absorbed directly into your feet, shins, knees and back. Flat feet not only cause an uncomfortable foot, but discomfort throughout other joints in the body as well. Most flat feet can be fixed with some custom arch supports. Arch supports will slide directly into a shoe and help cushion your feet to maximize comfort. In extremely severe cases of flat feet, surgery is necessary in order to help build arches into your feet. This type of surgery is extremely lengthy and painful initially, but in the long run can lead to a much better quality of life.

Bunions and plantar fasciitis are another reason for foot discomfort. Bunions most commonly affect women, and are caused by a misalignment of bone and tissue. The most common kinds of bunions are around the instep of the big toe--most likely from wearing tight-fitting or pointed-toe shoes. While in some cases, bunions don't cause any problems, they frequently can cause an extreme amount of pain. Treatment for bunions often includes keeping the feet up and elevated, or sometimes surgery to reduce the size and shape of the bunions. Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by flat feet, high arches, or a major increase in weight. It is caused by irritation, swelling, and pain in the thick band of tissue running from the heel through the arch of the foot. It can create an extreme amount of discomfort for people who are suffering from this condition, most commonly in the morning when taking the first steps, or after having been off your feet for a while. Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis includes custom orthotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, elevation, and sometimes in severe cases steroid injections.

One of the most common causes of foot discomfort comes from wearing uncomfortable shoes. Women often subject themselves to tall heels, which not only compromise balance, but put a lot of strain on the arch and ball of the foot. While they may look terrific, they can often cause discomfort and long-term damage to your feet. Wearing shoes with a heel no higher than 1 1/2 inches is recommended in order to maintain good foot health. If you are going to wear higher heels, be sure to switch them off for more comfortable shoes throughout the day whenever possible. This will help keep your feet from aching by the end of the day.

Having tired, sore, aching feet can certainly have a negative impact on your quality of life. If you can't get around comfortably, you may find yourself missing out on a lot of what is going on around you. Taking good care of your feet can insure you will be able to get up and moving, and get in on the action around you. Making sure you take care of your feet can make sure you have a happy, healthy lifestyle!
