Why Should I Interview a Contractor?

By: Sarah Carlye

You think you found a concrete floor contractor. Your best friend recommended this contractor and you saw the excellent results. You may wonder if it is still necessary to interview the contractor before hiring. It is still very important to interview the contractor. If you are choosing a contractor on your own, an interview will be even more important.

Why interview the contractor your best friend used? Your best friend and you may get along perfectly but could you live in your best friend’s house? Could you keep the schedule your best friend does? Would you wear the same size and style of clothing as your best friend? Would you be happy working the job that your best friend does? Chances are you cannot answer, “yes”, to every question. Even though you and your best friend are very similar, you may be very different when it comes to how you work with and get along with a contractor. You will be working closely with your contractor. An interview will assure that the two of you get along and communicate well together.

Before you start interviewing a contractor for a job, narrow down the potential contractor list to about 3-4 contractors. If none of them work out, you can go back and make a new list of potential contractors to hire.

Set up a specific time to meet in person (preferable) or on the phone for the interview so that the contractor can set time aside and not be rushed during the interview. When interviewing a contractor, bring in a pad of paper so you can make notes regarding the answers and the attitude of the contractor during the interview.

When interviewing a contractor, pay attention to the reaction and attitude of the contractor when you ask questions. Is the contractor at ease with being questioned or irritated? Chances are you will have lots of questions regarding how the job is proceeding. You have a right to ask questions and a right to receive answers to your questions. Your contractor should be comfortable and at ease during the interview. A contractor who is eager to answer your questions during the interview is even better.
