Which is the Best Portable Workbench for You?

By: Mark McPherson

Thinking about investing in a new workbench? Well, there are a number of key points to consider before spending your money. Here is a brief list of things you need to consider.
1 Sturdy and Strong
This is a must have! There is little point in having a flimsy workbench, its as simple as that! The top needs to be thick and durable to take it when its being bashed about, while the main frame has to be strong but at the same time flexible and lightweight.
2 Folding and wall-mountable
If space is a premium then a folding workbench is a must, and ideally it should be easy to hang out of the way too so should be light enough to lift but still sturdy. The folding mechanism should be easy to use and cause no concern for getting your fingers jammed either.
3 Pockets for Tools
If you use an array of tools and you are away from your usual workplace, then its very handy indeed to have detachable pockets that fix onto the workbench but do not get in the way of your work. This way, no more wandering around trying to find that tool that you only put down 5 minutes previously, somewhere
4 Mobility of the Workbench
Mobility could be a key factor for you. Apart from the bench being lightweight, with the addition of wheels for extra-easy transport the bench becomes even more versatile. The wheels should be easy to lock in place when down and also when not in use.
5 Height Adjustable
Often the height of the workbench is overlooked. But when it comes to working on a project that takes time this can become an important consideration. Why strain your back when you can adjust the height of the bench to suit your requirements?
6 Can the Bench Handle Uneven Surfaces?
If you are working on an uneven surface you need a workbench that is going to be stable regardless of the terrain. Make sure then that the legs of the bench are constructed in such a way that they can cope with some measure of uneven ground.
7 Affordable Option
When first deciding that you need a workbench there is a lot to learn so making up your mind as to a budget is a very hit and miss affair. However, with a bit of study you can soon narrow down your requirements and then figure your budget from there.
8 Range of Vices
A good workbench should either come with a range of vices or at least have the capacity to affix different vices. This depends entirely upon your own needs, but do keep in mind that you may need to use your bench for another purpose one day.
