What to look for in Natural Skin Care Products for Sun Damaged and Aging Skin

As we age or skin begins to lose its collagen and elastin. This wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for the fact these components are what give our skin its firmness and elasticity. So basically, their breakdown leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. Molecules normally have an even number of electrons, but when an extra or unpaired electron appears, it becomes a free radical. Free radicals are unstable and quickly steal from another electron to gain stability.
To do this it "hijacks" electrons from the nearest molecule creating, yet again, an odd number of electrons. This newly deprived electron becomes an entirely new process and a chain reaction is put into action.
If this process is ignored it can eventually destroy healthy cells. This is where antioxidants fit in. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by surrendering one of their electrons to stabilize them.
This is why antioxidants are crucial in slowing down the aging process and repairing the damage caused by too much solar exposure. If you're concerned about the damage that the sun has caused to your skin then take into consideration the following recommendations.
My first recommendation is to moderate your sun bathing. Of course we all want tanned, glowing skin, but the effects on our skin are very difficult to reverse once they have set in. So if you want darker skin, try using a self tanning lotion instead.
My second recommendation is closely related to the first. If you absolutely have to stay in the sun for prolonged periods of time, use a good sunscreen. The best sunscreen lotion is that which has an SPF30 or higher.
My third recommendation is to get as many antioxidants as you can. This applies to both topical and ingested antioxidants, so watching what you eat can be a big help in improving your resistance to sun damage.
Don't just pick your favorite produce. Go out and purchase foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains. A good rule of thumb is choosing from a wide variety of colors to make your diet more exciting.
Some of the best foods are berries of all kinds. So try eating more blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries to increase your levels of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and fibers. Tomatoes and red grapes are also high in antioxidants. However, if you prefer other types of foods then here are a few: broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, garlic, soy, spinach, carrots and whole grains.
The antioxidant properties discovered in foods aren't obtained through diet alone, as a matter of fact, berries are very common ingredient used in some natural skin care products.
