What are Otolaryngologists?

By: Ruth Goines

Head and neck surgery is a specialty which deals with conditions which affect patients, both surgical and non-surgical, from the collar bone up outside of the brain and spinal cord. Specialists go through a rigorous surgical training and are eligible to become certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. Otolaryngologists treat a variety of diseases related to the head and neck including hearing loss, head and neck cancers and other tumors, dizziness, sinus conditions, facial trauma and congenital abnormalities, throat infections, voice problems, and other specialized conditions of the head and neck.
Typical ear complaints that ears, nose, and throat physicians deal with include hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, ear infections, trauma to the ear, and congenital problems with the ear. Surgeries performed include placing ear tubes, placing cochlear implants, recreating the external ear and ear canal, and recreating the ear drum. They are also a good first stop for patients with hearing loss - and those who are looking for hearing aids.
ENT surgeons are particularly well trained for certain types of nasal surgery. With an understanding of the structure and function of the nose, ENT surgeons can help patients to improve breathing through the nose and in certain cases, even improve the structure and look of the nose. Certain doctors have even done additional training past residency in facial plastic & reconstructive surgery. These physicians are particularly suited to help patients improve the look and function of the nose.
Facial plastic surgery is a field of special interest in head and neck surgeons. With an intimate understanding of head and neck anatomy, otolaryngologists are particularly suited to reconstruction of trauma defects or cosmetic surgery to improve the structure and function of the face and nec region. Some surgeons will even complete additional training in cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery.
Allergy and sinus diseases are closely related. With tools of medical treatment as well as surgical opening of the sinus passages, ENT surgeons are well suited to treat allergy and sinus disease which can be a significant bother to patients. While not a life threatening condition, chronic allergies and sinus disease can be miserable. Appropriate treatment can significantly improve the quality of life for patients.
