What You Need to Know About The Feature-Rich Trencher

By: Sunil Punjabi

You can get hold of a trencher from any of the top manufacturers like Bobcat, Gehl or Manitou. The trenchers are quite useful for tough jobs like cutting into tough ground. They are usually available in the form of an attachment and can be picked based on the nature of the task. For example, there are trenchers for laying cables, trenchers to dig irrigation systems, trenchers for laying power lines or water lines and trenchers which are used for fencing or for building walls. These attachments are rugged and designed to trench through hard rocky soil as well, which is why they are so popular amongst construction and landscaping contractors. You can pick trenchers for delivering depths of 2 feet as well as 5 feet.

You will come across different kinds of trenchers. There are those driven with mechanical chain, with a dewatering range as well. This will help you not just with regular trenching but also vertical trenching. The other variety is trencher with hydraulic chain drive with a rugged design and capability to function in tough conditions. The utility range can be operated in a wide variety of conditions. One of the biggest benefits of the hydraulic chain drive trenchers is that they can be more flexible as far as movements are concerned. Not only are they easy to maintain, they also provide features like side-shift which cannot be achieved using the mechanical chain drive. You will come across large trenchers with horsepower in the range of 185hp to 600hp. They can also give you digging capabilities from 96 inches to around 216 inches. The cutting width of the trenchers also varies from 24 inches to 48 inches when the horsepower ranges between 185 and 600hp.

Some manufacturers provide you with a wide variety of trenchers ranging from sliding offset conveyor trenchers to micro-trenchers. The latter has a lower horsepower rating of around 65hp giving you a cutting width of just about 2 inches. There are center mount and sliding offset trenchers which have been designed for heavy duty usage as well. So, you can pick one trencher for light trenching jobs and a different one for medium jobs. Similarly, for heavy jobs the side-shift, hydraulic trenchers would be the perfect solution. High flow performance is offered by some of the heavy duty trenchers like LT405 from Bobcat.

There are three important attributes that a trencher must definitely provide. You will need side-shift for flexibility especially when trenching close to massive walls or objects. The side-shift provides optimization. Trenchers of the highest quality are quite versatile as well giving you the option to customize the teeth and chain configurations to suit the requirements and the nature of the task. Different configurations are obviously needed based not just on the condition of the soil but also the digging power. You will also need the trenchers to offer good power on all kinds of soils ranging from gravel to black dirt. You will need efficient trenchers to prevent the material from covering up the trench too.
