What Should You Look For In A Memory Foam Mattress Topper?

By: Vassell DuCasse

If your current mattress is uncomfortable, if you are waking up with backaches, your legs or arms are asleep, or you are starting to feel the support metal through the pads, then you may want to try a memory foam mattress topper.
When looking to buy a mattress topper, there are some things you will need to keep in mind. Memory foam products are somewhat expensive, so you will want to make sure that you are getting the best for the money spent
Since memory can be compressed, most products arrive in the compressed state. This makes carrying the product much easier than carrying a normal sized mattress. Before purchase of any memory foam product that is compressed, be sure that you find out what type of compression method was used. This is normally printed on the box. Compression by vacuum should be avoided as this causes the cells of the memory foam to break. The broken cells cause the product to be uncomfortable and will lead to a quicker breakdown of the product. Memory foam products that have been mechanically compressed before packaging will not show this type of damage. They will spring back to their original size and shape without the damage of vacuum packaging.
Foam density is a very important factor in memory foam products. Higher density foam products may be more expensive, but will ultimately give better results and more satisfaction. Finding a foam product with a density of at least four pounds is good, however, finding a foam product with a five pound density is even better.
Installation of the foam product is easy. Avoid using sharp objects to remove packaging material. Tear boxes open with your hands. Remove the plastic that is used to keep the foam compressed, by tearing it with your hands. The goal is to unpack the foam product without cutting the memory foam.
Once the topper is out of its packaging you are ready to unroll it onto your bed. Unroll and unfold the topper. If it has been stored in a warm place, this task is much easier. Even when warm, the memory foam may be somewhat stiff. After getting the topper into place, just wait until it fully expands. This process can take up to an hour. The memory foam will do its own thing in the expansion process, and there is nothing you can do to make the process go any faster.
After the topper has returned to its full shape, make your bed as normal. Deep pocket fitted sheets will be helpful at this point. They allow you to cover both the topper and the mattress sides. Do not forget that your bed is now slightly higher than it was before.
Here it the greatest part of the whole process. Enjoy a great night's sleep. In the morning you will not have backaches or arms that are asleep. Memory foam adjusts to fully support your body. Your weight is evenly supported. No longer will you feel the pressure spots from spending your time sleeping in only one position. Doesn't a good nights sleep sound great? Good night.
