Beauty and skin care products have popped up all over the place with labels that shout things like “natural!” and “organic!” But thanks to marketing and the sheer quantity of available products with these labels, those terms have gotten muddied. What do “organic” and “natural” actually mean? And what do these terms mean for your own daily beauty regimen?
First, let’s take a look at natural skin cream and what it contains. In products, this term simply means that some or all of the ingredients contained in the product are minerals or plant compounds that can be found in nature, are minimally processed and are not artificially produced. Natural products are not necessarily organic, though they can be.
Next, let’s focus on organic beauty products. Organic means that not only were all the ingredients found in nature, but no pesticides or chemical compounds were used to aid in their growth or harvest. None of their ingredients are modified, and they contain no artificial preservatives. There are different classifications of “how organic” a product can be, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and its rating system.
Just because a product contains ingredients found in nature does not mean the product is natural, though. Natural ingredients can be altered with preservatives, perfumes and other artificial components, which prevent them from being truly “natural.” These additives can be just as irritating to your skin as products that don’t contain any nature-found ingredients. Check the labels of your potential products to ensure that your hydrating cream actually only contains ingredients found in nature, though there is no governing body to certify if a product is actually natural.
On the other hand, the USDA or other countries’ governing bodies will place “certified organic” labels on beauty products that are grown sans pesticides and chemicals. With the USDA, these products are only allowed to use the label if the product contains more than 95% organic matter.
So which is better for your skin — organic or natural skin lotion? Well, based on this information, it really depends on each individual product and what percentage of each product is actually natural or organic. For example, a product that is made up of purely plant and mineral ingredients is going to be better for your body than one that only contains one nature-based ingredient and lots of synthetic fillers. Keep in mind that a good portion of the moisturizers you put on your skin are absorbed into your body, so it’s important to make sure the best possible ingredients are in your skin lotions.
For the healthiest skin experience with no chemicals, additives, irritants or detergents, look for facial skin care products that are both organic and natural.
